Folic Acid is a B vitamin that has been known to play an important role in the production of normal red and white blood cells. Everyone needs folic acid as it is essential for synthesis and repair of DNA. Folic Acid is involved in the synthesis of nucleotides and amino acid metabolism such as the methylation and conversion of homocysteine to methionine. Healthful diets with adequate folate may reduce a woman’s risk of having a child with a brain or spinal cord defect. 0.8 mg Folic acid in a dietary supplement is more effective in reducing the risk of neural tube defects than a lower amount in foods in common form.
